Trip to Wasai-3: Flying Fox and Rock Climbing Activities

Sorry for not updating for more than a week, hehe, was quite busy with homeworks (and staying back everyday).

Here’s some of the photos taken 2 weeks ago, on our trip to Wasai-3 with the scouts. It’s a scout activity organized by the scouts, and many of us joined. It was fun and tiring, hehe!

Well, the original plan was to go Tasek Lama for the ‘Flying Fox’ and rock climbing activity, but too bad, Tasek Lama was under renovation or something, so the venue changed last minute (we received notification through sms on the night before the event) to Wasai-3.

We reached the port (the one next to Yayasan, where people get water taxi to Kampong Ayer) at around 7.30am and waited till nearly 9am. Took water taxi to the opposite side of the river, and gathered at a school.

Zhi Shiong applying sunblock like a total n00b! You n00b! =D Actually I have a similar shot too la.. haha.Regrouped as we reach the opposite side of the river, I forgot what’s the name of the school already. We went into one of the class and mess around with it, hehe! xD Nola, we just sit down and took some photos, hehe. =D Continue Reading…

First Macro Photography using d-SLR : Concentrate, Discover & Suprised

Butterfly or bee? Or hybrid of both? I have no idea what this insect is, it has the wings of a butterfly but the body of a bee, what the? *confused*

Took these using CX dad’s Canon EOS 350D & 55-200mm lens, in front of SA (students affairs) office in MD, hehe. =D Most of these photos are slightly out of focus because the DoF (Depth of field @ The width of the region which is in focus) is very narrow @ 200mm and it’s a flying insect. And since it’s not a macro lens, I can’t focus close enough, most of these photos are severely cropped, not really usable (for print), sigh. =(

Bonus shots:

An unknown bug I found in my garden. Really weird bug, looks cool tho. =DI love this shot although it’s out of focus, like the pose of the flying insect, cool~ =D

Here’s another unknown bug I found in my garden. It’s quite big, around the size of my thumb, and I really like the way it fly, way cool man~ =D But a bit scary when I was taking photos of it, as you can see (from second shot), it was charging at me, so yea *phew*. =D

First Bird Photography with d-SLR : Observe, Passion & Patient

Since I was hook on with documentaries some 5 years ago (when I got over the all the wrestling craps and cartoons) wildlife photography is always part of my dream. One of my dream career is to work as a wildlife photographer or documentary producer, haha, where as Discovery & NatGeo (National Geographic) are among my dream companies (whom I would love to work with/under).

There’s pros and cons for living in Brunei, the pros is that 80% of our country is covered with dense forest, and there’s SO many things out there in the wildlife, it’s just a matter of courage and passion. The cons is that we don’t even have a decent (don’t talk about the mini zoo, man…) zoo! I miss the zoos in Singapore and Bintulu (absolutely in love with it!). I think when I got a decent collection of gears, I’ll go Temburong or KK or somewhere for some wildlife photography, that would be so cool, man. =D Who wants to come along? =D

Ok, get back to the main point. =) Well, as I mentioned before, CheaXin’s dad borrowed me his Canon EOS 350D, and I had it for almost a week. During the week, I took quite a number of photos in my neighborhood. Took then in the evening, after I came back from school and when it’s not raining. One of the project I was having so much fun (and frustration) doing is - Bird photography.

Bird photography isn’t about taking photos of birds only, it’s about passion & patient and the ability to observe and hold on to opportunities that might be lost within seconds (you would never know when would a bird fly pass you). You need a lot of passion to be able to spend hours observing the birds and you need endless patient to keep on trying, and approaching the birds as slow as possible.

I wasn’t very serious this time, I was just trying to do some snapshots on the birds, and see how close I can get (without the use of lure, feeds, camouflage and etc). I didn’t put it my effort, so yea, I understand why the outcome sucks.

Oh yea, I am very interested in digiscoping, might get myself a spotting scope (and build-up a digiscoping system) after I get my d-SLR, hehe, then go Temburong, wooo, syok! xD Check out this cool bird digiscoping site and the gallery.

Here’s some of my (ugly) bird photographs:

A sparrow? Not sure what bird is it, I am a total n00b in brid watching, LoL. It’s very small tho, smaller than our palm, I think it’s a sparrow, hehe.A sparrow? Love the ‘birdie’ on the left, hehe, love it’s ‘expression’, LoL.Two birds (I am very sure these are sparrows, LoL) resting on some unknown structure of a building which is under construction.Told you I was just doing some snapshots, I even use flash! *slap myself* Urgh.Ok, this one is the one which I missed, damn! The day was dark already, it’s almost 7pm, and I was still looking at tree for birds, and suddenly one flew towards the hibiscus beside me, and I think it’s eating something? It was just 1m away from me! But it was too dark, the auto-focus won’t work, my eyes sucks, manual focus won’t work either, I was forced to use flash, failed too… *CRIED OUT LOUD*

P.S: All photos (except for the last shot) were taken at least 4m away from the subjects. I cropped these photos severely, and none of them is usable (for print).

Bonus photos - My dogs/puppies:

My dog yawning, hehe! xDClose-up of my first puppy/dog, Tutut (as in ‘fei tut tut’ in cantonese), hehe! xDMy neighbor’s dog. Try compare this with the one I took 2 weeks ago using compact DC. =)

P.S: Try compare these with those I took 2 weeks ago using my *late* compact DC (Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-M1). =)

Lend A Hand people =)

Jan Shim @ ShimWorld had always been someone I admire both as a photographer and blogger.

Recently, he voiced out about a case in Brunei, about Desmond Chin, a 20 years old young man who suffered from Leukemia.

With cost of surgery estimated to be anywhere between $100k and $200k, the road to recovery may be a long one considering Desmond is a Bruneian Permanent Resident who is unable to obtain financial support from the government. Hence the appeal for financial aid in other ways possible. The predicament—the hospital has not been able to identify the health companies in Brunei that carry the new cancer treatment drug, CLOFARABINE, to help clear his body of the cancer cells before bone marrow transplant surgery can be performed.

Donations can be made to Desmond’s Baiduri Bank Account:
Full Name: CHIN YUN CHUN
Account No.: 6000706346202

P.S: It’s the same case/person some few mentioned in MD, I think some people in MD already started planning to help him, let’s join ‘em people!

You can also donate through Paypal, please go to the full article(here) for more details.

MD Tennis Competition @ BTC : First Sports Photography with d-SLR & Exposure Control

I had my first sports photography (using d-SLR) experience 2 days ago, at BTC (Brunei Tennis Club). Took more than 700 photos (some 100-300 are taken by KelvinTang & CheaHong), that’s almost 1.5GBs, hehe! Spent 2 hours just to scan through and do some minor correction (1-2 clicks correction), hehe, xD!!

Since this is my FIRST Sports Photography experience, there’s a lot of things that I still gotta improve. I did a lot of mistakes in setting the shutter speed and this resulted in over-exposure (details blown out by too much light) of some 30% of the photos. I set the shutter speed @ 1/200 seconds, but actually we need at least 1/400 seconds to freeze actions. It’s difficult to focus too, too fast…

And I sucks in composing the photos too, I like to do telephoto/candid and tight portraiture too much, that’s why I captured very lil’ actions (Kelvin’s photos compensated this tho). And I took all the photos from the side, Kelvin’s frontal shots are great man! =(

But still, pretty happy with the outcome, since it’s my first time, hehe. Ok! Time to let the photos do the talking~ xD

JieMing in action.Kelvin in action.RenWei waiting to strive with back hand.WeiDeng’s winning pose, hehe. Love this shot. =)JingYi~ Cute? xDTight portraiture and candid of CheaXin, the female champion of the day, =)Tight portraiture of Robinson. =)ZOMFGROFLMAOWTFBBQ! xD I think Kelvin took this. =DPikShien and Sheeling. I like this shot. =)Wow, Rain! ROFL. Cool dude. xD

JonathanTee in action, wooo! xDCheaXin in action, woo, looks pro! Hehe. =DRobinson in action! Woo, love this shot, =)JonathanTee in action again, wooo! xDRenWei, looks cool, hehe. xDThat’s me! Cool man. xD ROFL. xDI must admit that she’s cute in this photo, HAHA!Candid shot of KuiChuan. The one at the back (red shirt) is YiChing. xD Funny people. =)*Run* (So fierce, hehe)JeffPang (white shirt), new friend, hehe. He’s also interested in Photography, hmmm.. =)Yihuey, CheaHong, CheaXin and Millie.HAHA, they’re imitating my ‘ultraman’ pose (to stabilize the camera, I use my left hand as a support by holding my right hand with it, and it looks like Ultraman’s pose), LoL. xDGroup photo, serious one…Group photo, crazy one!~ Free pose! xD

P.S: Bear in mind that some of the photos are taken by Kelvin, CheaHong or others. =)

Updates: More photos due to strong demand (HAHAHA, not really la). xD

Errr… look at Louis’ feet! *burst into laughter* OMFGROFLMAOWTFBBQ! xDSweet. =)RenWei in action, again. Not sure what he’s ready to do, serving or smack? Forgot. xDI like this shot. Many things are captured in it: actions (Louis in action, added interestingness to the photo), the spectators on the bench (the content, area in focus), PikShien at the back (the expression added more interestingness to the photo, and provided an entry/exit point for the photo). =DCandid shot of YiHuey. I like this, I like the expression, and Derick’s mouth/face added some ‘interestingness’ into the whole composition. =) Asked Millie if I can put this up, she said it’s ok, so yea, if YiHuey don’t want it here, just let me know, I’ll take it down immediately. =)Kelvin and Robinson in action. I like this shot for no particular reason, LoL. *shrug*
