Dilemma: SmugMug or Flickr?

I just degraded my server from a $5/month Small Orange plan by AsmallOrange.com (400MB space, 10GB bandwidth) to a $25/year Tiny Orange plan (75MB space, 3GB bandwidth). I bought the Small Orange plan (which I don’t need) at first due to my wrong valuation of space/bandwidth usage. Until today, I haven’t even break the 50MB barrier on space usage, and barely hits 2GB on bandwidth usage.

P.S: Notable customer service from ASmallOrage.Com. The guy degrade my account instantly (after he confirms my need/want) and they refund me all the price differences between the two plans for this month.

Since I saved (when I decided to buy something, I allocate budgets, if I get that particular thing at a cheaper price, I’ll assume I ’saved’ some money, just my own policy) $35 per year now, I decided to get myself a paid photo-hosting account. For all this time, Flickr is my first and only choice. I was impressed by Flickr for long, but I found Smugmug.Com recently.

Flickr is more like a community, where you get to meet lot of friends (professional photographers and beginners as well), and it’s a great place to get some motivation and advices. I gained a lot of knowledge from the community of Flickr, and I love browsing photos taken by the people, too. Where as Smugmug impressed me by it’s look (the sleek, intuitive, web2.0 interface) and the amazingly neat album-organisation. I also love the password-protected private gallery option (Flickr only allows one to set sets to private, and only people you defined as Friends/Family can view those photos, and this required your friends to sign up for a Flickr account).

Anyway, I uploaded photos taken yesterday (movie outing - Enchanted) to both sites, take a look people. =)

Currently, I lean towards Smugmug, but there’s two factors which makes me wanted to go for Flickr:

  1. Flickr is cheaper by $10 ($25 per year, while Smugmug cost $40 per year but there would be a $5 discount for first year)
  2. I am a beginner, and Flickr is a great learning ground.

Some advices, please? (I would like to hear from you guys since you’re the one whom I would be sharing my photos with)

Let’s get back to some blogging. Erm, before going to The Mall (for the movie, and some meet-up with friends), Tiong asked me and others to go bring some papers from Business Department, to throw to the recycling bin (the big green one at the back of library), but hell, it’s not SOME, it’s A LOT! HaoHan, ChiiHaw, WeiDeng, Choo WeiLik and Robinson were dragged along. Tough job, and we all sweat like hell, and it rains, hell..

Here’s some photos:

We borrowed the cart from the cleaners, well, accident happens, LoL.

ET: Oh yea, you’re Flickr member too, hehe. Yea, and Flickr really seems like a better choice for a non-pro like me =p Yea man, Smugmug so cool! =D Hmmm, I guess I’ll just go with Flickr, and maybe 3 years later, when I accumulate enough photos to set up a portfolio, then I’ll get a smugmug a/c too, good idea? =D

Derick: Hmmm, yea, intuitive interface~ =D I love the way they load up the photos (rough pix, and refine wave by wave) and display bigger size photo, and easy download, and easy comment (no need to register an a/c) and display the photo info. Sigh, price.. community.. lol

WeiDeng: Well, and it snows now because of you.
