19.04.08 - Shooting Girls Shooting Basketballs

MF (manual focus) + prime lens (can’t zoom lo) + 10 girls running fast in the basketball court + very little light (even when I use f/1.8 and ISO 1600, my shutter speed can hardly go beyond 1/125th second) …

=

… blur, OOF (out of focus) shots and a crazy/pervert-looking photographer, lol.

Seriously, just trying to get some shots done, but it’s catastrophic. These 4 are the only ones which are acceptable. =\ Basically, I am not doing any composition at all, all I do is shoot a lot and hope that 1 out of 10 of them is acceptable. Most of my time was spent on following the ball while MF-ing in split seconds, lol. Tough. =\ Might give it another try in coming matches, depends on whether I can keep up with my schedule or not.

By the way, life took a good turn these days, I am expecting brighter and happier days after my June exams, hehe. =) I am very happy these days, =p

Becky Shooting

^ Her name is Becky right? See, the shutter speed is not fast enough to freeze motion, her leg blurred. You need at least 1/200th to freeze motion in sports.

SinYee

^ SinYee attempting a shot while Peggie (I think that’s her) was defending.

In Air

^ I have a love and hate feeling for this composition, hehe. (Because it’s nice, but yet imperfect, IMO)

XiaoTing On The Run

^ Wooo! The MVP - Yap XiaoTing! =D

The Basketball tournament is organised by MD’s basketball club, PYRO club and HAC (Health Awareness Club). 40% of the proceed will go into charity. HAC are having quite a number of activities these days, kudos to JingYi. =)

Jason: LoL, HaoHan noticed it too, I didn’t tho, I was trying to crop out the annoying red guy there, hahahaha! xD

jason Posted on 20 April, 2008 at 9:57 pm

i guess it fits in the composition of the 3rd photo. =p 硬撑!

IngSiang (Vagabond) Posted on 20 April, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Yea man, reminds me of Shutter. =p But in Shutter they use Canon EOS, not Nikon, lala. xD

teddY Posted on 20 April, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Really sharp photos you have over there :) your set speaks volume about the importance of having control over shutter speed! I simply adore your photos because they’re so crisp and clear, with strong (but not overwhelming) contrast. The colour saturation might be a little too strong for some (the red on their shorts, for example), but I’m loving it. It adds vibrancy into the whole photo, as compared with the bad job dull colours will do.

Oh and I’ve narrowed down my choices of a new camera - I have a few dSLRs in mind (Sony A200, Nikon D60) and oddly enough, a prosumer camera (Olympus SP-570). Any advice? Thanks a lot in advance!

teddY: Yea, I love vivid photos more than dull photos! But I admit that those red are kind of overkill and the overexpose-ness of their white shirts/pants are tough to deal with, too. =p

My safe-but-is-on-the-border shutter speed is unable to freeze the motion of the guys because they’re way too fast for 1/125th or 1/80th. =\ At least they’re good enough for the girls, haha.

From what I see from your shooting habit, you shoot wide most of the time (probably you’re just limited by your 3x zoom, hehe) and you rarely shoot indoor (or you hate to shoot indoor because P&S sucks when shooting indoor). In that case, the superzoom prosumer would give you better reach (and the IQ isn’t really that bad) but wouldn’t get you too far for low-light stuffs. In contrast, unless you have quite some cash, dSLR won’t give you too much reach (because lenses cost a fortune, sometimes) but would deliver amazing result for low-light situation.

So, you should really weight and see with feature is more important for you, low-light or telephoto.

If you go with Sony Alpha series, you get in-camera stabilizer, which i never work with so I can’t comment much. Personally, I would go with a Nikon due to it’s ergonomic design but would think a bit more due to the lack of servo motor in D40/D40x/D60. A servo motor drives the auto-focus of a wide range of lenses, without it, D40/D60 can’t auto-focus with lenses that doesn’t have the name AF-S across them. Which is pretty bad because AF-S lenses are usually expensive.

Honest speaking, the 50mm alone is enough to make you drop D60/D40, hehe. But if you’re like me, don’t mine MF-ing and limited budget, D40/D60 is the way to go. The new VR lens is also a good one, you really should check out Nikon kit lens, they’re among the best in the market (compare with other kit lenses). If you can get a second hand D80 for a decent price (SGD1,000++?), then grab it! =D

Well, you should go to a camera shop and try to handle D40/450D/400D/D60/A-200, you’ll see the difference. =p I decided on D40 only after I played around with my friend’s. =p

w3ihon: ROFL!

Kay: i think someone shoot from some distance away, it’s on its way to the ring, =p

Mirez: Haha, I didn’t notice the 50mm challenge thread, hehe, sorry. Anyhow, my shots were on Borneo Bulletin? I didn’t know, maybe my friends sent it. Anyhow, no one get the full-size version from me, so yea, hahaha, they got the 500pixels version, and if you put that into printing + newspaper quality, it’s pretty disastrous, rofl. xD

teddY Posted on 29 April, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Thanks for the tips, they’re really helpful. I don’t bother asking those assistants in camera shops because they’ll usually get me to buy the more expensive ones, or try to lure me with all those goodies (who wants a super lightweight tripod that topples in the slightest wind?)… thank you sooo much!

Yep I rarely shoot indoors because P&S cameras (like mine) is a big noise generator per se for each freaking photo. Even when I shoot cityscapes at night with a longer shutter speed (done by switching to night mode, and doesn’t give me full control of the shutter speed), the whole photo is riddled with noise. That’s why I’ve been combing for a dSLR (most probably Nikon or Sony) or a Prosumer (Panasonic) camera…

Indoor scenes are indeed very tricky for P&S, none of the 120+ photos I’ve taken at a recent birthday party has people with discernible faces =.= how irritating. For wide angle, I can always use panoramas haha :) I think a dSLR will be better. As long as they can shoot in RAW mode, it’s good enough for me, since HDRs can be made from one single RAW file.

IngSiang (Vagabond) Posted on 2 May, 2008 at 11:38 am

teddY: Don’t ask them, just request to try to handle an A-200, a D40 and a 400D. If your friend has any, borrow it and fiddle around for an hour or so. =) I am sure they would allow, under their supervision, hehehe.

And plan your future purchases, look at them as a system. Do you need to play with flash? if yes, who has an edge over it? I believe Nikon is the pioneer when it comes to flash, tho, their CLS seems to be a great success. Canon is known for their low-light, clean high ISO shots, they use CMOS sensor. Their telephoto lens are very nice too, something I really like is their f/4 L lenses, such as 70-200mm f/4L. Erm, Sony is quite new to the dSLR market and they evolve very fast, a good alternative. =) I am not sure what’s their biggest selling point tho, maybe just because it is SONY? Sony is a giant company, provides very strong support (means you can expect the company to last forever, lol). Olympus has good colour, I think.

Haha, never try indoor shot without flash, on a P&S, =D That’s why I get myself a dSLR, I want good photos to print and keep until I am old, HAHAHA, I mean photos of the current phase of my life, =p All dSLR can shoot RAW file. =p

teddY Posted on 2 May, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Indoor + flash + P&C is a perfect remedy for a crappy photo, haha! That probably very much explains why I have not posted a single indoor shot in my blog :)

Thanks for the tips! When it comes to flash, Nikon is one of the best (even the photography club in my school uses Nikon dSLRs). They’ve very sturdy and the dials are positioned quite perfectly, but it’s just a little too heavy for me. I think what gives Sony so much attention is that it has a pretty huge customer base for a new dSLR manufacturer, and it’s dSLRs are evolving really fast.

IngSiang (Vagabond) Posted on 2 May, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Haha, agree, =p Well, flashes are always heavy because of erm, yea, turning moment + center of gravity stuffs, lol. They’re on top of the camera, so it kinds of spoil the balance of the camera and lens, so, if your camera is light (like my D40, or any of the low-end dSLR) and your lens is the super compact kit lens, you’ll find the weight of the flash annoying. But still, the outcome is nice so you love the flash more that you’ll hate it, =D Yea, Nikon’s interface is known for being very user friendly, I am so Nikon-ish now that I would find a Canon super hard to maneuver around, lol. Ah well, maybe my Canon mate would find Nikon hard to fiddle around, too. =p

Yea, the pace at which they’re evolving is tremendous, not surprising as it’s backed by such a huge company, and Sony has always been the one who had been making all the sensors, =p They got the glass-making technologies from Minolta and Carl Zeiss, so yea, they might end up on par with the two titans. =p I hope Sony picks up polaroid, hahaha. =D But I think Sony’s lens lineup is still quite incomplete, you might want to look into that. =) I mean, after you finish university, you might invest even more in photography, haha, so you gotta consider whether Sony can come out with what you want 4-5 years later. =)

How I wish I can afford an DSLR..then I can buy a 50mm F1.8 lens…

That’ll be my dream ..

As for now..I’m still stuck wif my prosumer and F2.8…swt..

IngSiang (Vagabond) Posted on 3 May, 2008 at 11:35 pm

=D My dream is f/1.2 now, haha. And auto-focus of course! =D And actually f/2.8 has it’s good, too.. =p f/1.8 is not very usable if you’re a purist, ie. you want everything in-focus, hehe. =D

Charleskey Posted on 4 May, 2008 at 12:34 am

nah..I dun wan everything in focus..I jz need my subject to stand out..

Wow, I heard Sony cam out wif a F1.2..but it’s vr vr costly.
