HM’s Birthday 3-in-1 Celebration : B&W
Posted in: 50mm f/1.8, B&W Photography, Brunei Darussalam, Candid Photography, Event Photography, Gathering with Friends, People/Portrait Photography, Street PhotographyFinally I’m here to update my blog and feature some photos I shoot during the 3-in-1 (float procession, fireworks & Tug-o-War) celebration for His Majesty’s 62nd birthday. It was a great night and I really enjoyed it, with ChiHo, WeiYik, ChungSun and Edwin Lim. =) Like JinYang said, my campaign (as mentioned in the previous post) is doing great and I can see great potential in Edwin, lol!
We (me & ChiHo) reached there at about 5.30pm (to avoid traffic jam), and the rest met up with us by 7pm. We were basically roaming around, shooting while waiting for the float procession and fireworks. I shoot mainly candid and kids/babies because this is the very few occasion which you can see interesting people in Brunei and most aren’t intimidated by cameras (many even posed for us). I was using ChiHo’s 50mm (thanks mate!) so it’s mainly portraits. =p
The fireworks are not quite as amazing but it’s nice to watch, too! It’s long but I was hoping for more big fireworks, rather than a lot of lil’ one, lol. But yea, really long firework show (and there’s 3-4 of them in total throughout the night), I was too lazy to shoot it tho’, since we weren’t in the best position to shoot it, =p
I met JinYang that night, the very first time we met (after knowing each other online), he were snapping around with his 450D + IS lens, =) We also met a couple school mates, Marcos and Arif and etc. =D And at the end of the day (10-11pm), we went MeiKuang to have supper (tired after hours of wandering) and then we went back to padang to shoot and play around with the float procession which parked there and ready to leave. It was fun! =p Crazy camwhore time, duh.
Guess that’s all, photo time! =p This is a black & white series, the best way to present street candid and portraitures, =p I love this series, so yea, hope you guys like it as well, do comment, yea? =)
^ A videographer from RTB, =p I like the way he hold his expression and block all distraction - including being shot by me for about half a minute (2 shots, I think. But takes a bit of manual focusing, =p) He need to minimize vibration and movement, i.e. victim of candid! =D I love the DoF in this shot, too!
^ A wide angle street shot of the night/evening market. =D I love this very much! =D
^ A very popular snack in Brunei’s night market. Sotong = Squid, Tutuk = knock. Basically it’s some dried squid, being hammered to thin sheet, and BBQed.
^ Saw these two posing for their friend to photograph, against the float procession (if I remember correctly) which moves behind them. =) I found both of them interesting, =D
^ There you go, another photog (there’s a couple more which I didn’t include in this post, lol), which I believe is from the media (not freelancer). =p I am happy about this shot because the details of the camera is well captured, I guess, =p
^ A typical Bruneian family involving themselves in the festival. =)
^ Photo credited to Edwin Lim. A very nice candid, dude! (He’s rather brave tho’, =S)

black and white are so nice:D
Back to B&W? XP As usual, nice.
Interesting set of pics.. Now i understand why you asked why i wasn’t using my 50mm. while everyone was busy taking pics of the fireworks, displays, floats, lights etc, you took pics of the people, which was the core essence of the night! nicely done
JinYang: Haha, at least with your IS lens, things aren’t quite as bad as it is on our non-VR kits, =p Yea, I think those fireworks, floats and lights (I shoot the light already, on another outing) are shot-to-death and are not unique, =p Now I think I need f/1.4, =p Btw, I did experience the hexagon once, at specific aperture + focusing distance. =)
OOO~ I like the picture you take on the street.. Look like another world.. Very sart!!! O.O
Thanks, I thought so too, must be the photoshop-ing, hehehe. =D
